A.C.T. at BCT

The Academy for Contemporary Theater is BCT’s newest offering.  Of course, we still have our gold standard Theater Lab programs, but we wanted to add more opportunities to bring the community into our home. Like adult acting classes. And playwriting classes. And even some classes for our younger artists. Come A.C.T. at BCT!

Fall Session:

September 7 – November 14, 2020
Monday & Wednesday 4:30 pm – 7 pm

Spring Session:

March 1 – May 15, 2021
Monday & Wednesday 4:30 pm – 7 pm

BCT Theater Lab, for youth 12-18 years old, is dedicated to the proposition that students are capable of more than we expect. That they have something to say and that it’s important to listen. We believe that theater makes us all better listeners, communicators, collaborators, and leaders. It teaches the language of empathy. Students make brand new plays from scratch and perform them on the BCT Mainstage. It’s unlike anything else in the valley, and it’s a whole lot of fun.

(Audition required, limited space available)

“I use to think Theater Lab was about writing, performing, and having fun in the process. No, that’s what you do, part of what you do, but not what Theater Lab is about. Theater Lab is about growing as a person. Learning to think in new ways, experience new things, be with new people.” ~Theater Lab Student

Fall Session:

September 8 – October 8, 2020
Tuesday & Thursday, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Spring Session:

March 2 – April 8, 2021
Tuesday & Thursday, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

We’ve expanded our education to Boise’s YOUTHIER side. That’s right… Theater Lab for 6-11 year olds! Our program for younger playmakers have classes that run on Tuesday and Thursday concurrently with our existing Theater Lab. Each five week session will culminate in a performance for family and friends in the BCT Loft.

(No audition required, limited space available.)

“When I started Theater Lab, I was barely able to talk to my classmates, let alone on stage in front of hundreds of people. Theater Lab forced me to speak my mind, and have confidence in my actions. This program has changed my life and made me into the person I am today.” ~Theater Lab Student

Next Session:

January 7 – February 18, 2021 Thursdays, 4 pm – 7 pm

Have you always wanted to try those playwriting skills solo? Here’s your chance! This class offers insight and guidance from one of the valley’s most sought after playwrights.

We are keeping the class small so you have the opportunity for the most one on one time. At the end of the session, your play will be read by professional actors in a night of staged readings.

Next Session:

March 22 – March 26, 2021
Monday – Friday, 9 am – 3pm

Get ready for one fun spring break! Learn acting, storytelling and the thrill of playing for an audience in this week-long workshop. Bonus for parents, it’s all day! Camps for ages 6-9, 9-12, and 13-18. No audition required. (A $40 fee will be added for cancellations less than 8 days before the start of camp).

“It was so cool making so many friends and bonding with them. The lab changed my perspective of many things in my life and I ended up being much happier than I was before I started BCT.” ~Theater Lab Student

Now A.C.T at BCT is including all the kids at heart! You asked and we listened. That’s right, adult acting classes!

These eight-week courses are designed to propel you further in your acting career, taught by one of the most talented local actors, Jessica Ires Morris.

Next Session:

January 27 – March 26, 2021 Mondays  7 – 9pm

(Audition only) This class focuses on student or working actors, college level and above. These are performers who have taken other acting courses and performed in plays, and who hope to work/are working with some frequency in the field – although not necessarily solely as performers. You should already have the ability to perform basic text analysis and be familiar with the idea of scene “beats”, objectives, obstacles, and with making strong and committed choices for your character. Actors will showcase their work for the community at the end of the course.

Fall Session:

Fall 2020 Dates TBA

For students of all abilities. This acting class explores the fundamentals of working with a contemporary script – text analysis, character development, physical presence, vocal and speech coaching and preparing for performance. If you are interested in getting back into performance, staying in shape artistically, or trying your hand at live performance, this is a great class for you.
