BOISE — The City of Boise is making it easy and educational to participate in the nation’s 250th anniversary this year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Boise is harnessing arts and culture, storytelling, exhibitions, civic events, history-themed gatherings, reading resources, and the city’s Fourth of July celebration to mark the anniversary in ways the city said in a news release “that honor our past and look ahead to the next 250 years.”
Guided by the five themes presented in the American Association for State and Local History’s 250th Anniversary Program Field Guide, the city’s commemoration reflects what makes Boise unique: a community grounded in history, strengthened by diverse voices and committed to building a thriving future for generations to come, the news release said.
“This is a historic moment, as communities across the nation come together to reflect on 250 years of the American experiment,” said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean. “Here in Boise, we are celebrating not only where we’ve been, but where we’re going — guided by shared values, civic pride, and a commitment to shaping a better future together.”
Boiseans of all ages are invited to discover and reflect on the city’s rich history through a series of America 250 events, which will kick off with a reading by Boise Contemporary Theater of Heidi Schreck’s Broadway hit, “What the Constitution Means to Me,” on Feb. 5 at JUMP. For additional details and a full schedule of city-sponsored events visit cityofboise.org/America250.
A series of America 250 guided tours and exhibitions will highlight Boise’s history. Some are available online now at https://www.cityofboise.org/departments/mayor/america-250/#tours-exhibitions, including “American Contradictions: A Boise Visual Chronicle,” “Voices of River Street: 1940-1972.” Titles being released later this year include “James Castle: Memory, Empire, and the Deaf Experience,” “History of Grove Street,” and “City Steps Guided Tours.”
