SHINSAI: THEATERS FOR JAPAN

Shinsai: Theaters for japan

A CALL TO ALL ARTISTS – YES, YOU!!!

On Sunday, March 11, the first anniversary of the great Japanese earthquake, Theater Communications Group is organizing performance events nationwide to raise funds for the Japan Playwrights Association to help the Japanese theater community affected by the disaster.

The collective event is called: SHINSAI: THEATERS FOR JAPAN.

Several Japanese playwrights have written short pieces and American artists including Edward Albee, Philip Kan Gotanda, Richard Greenberg, John Guare, Naomi Iizuka, Tony Kushner, Suzan-Lori Parks, Doug Wright, John Kander, Fred Ebb and Stephen Sondheim have written or donated short sections of their work to be performed royalty free.

Local artists nationwide are also creating their own pieces (theater, non-theater, static) as part of the event. Nationwide this is entirely volunteer, and the audience will be asked for donations of all sizes.

BCT is planning to be the local host for SHINSAI – - – as a performance installation with pieces being performed and created around the building – - – essentially we curate the mix of who performs/creates where – - – in this way there can be a wide spectrum of preparation. Some pieces can be read. Others can be memorized and rehearsed. Still others could be improvised. We already have some cool ideas, we think, but there’s plenty of open space here and scripts unspoken-for.

The schedule on March 11 would be:

early morning: access to the building

1:30  silence for “Moby Dick” reading on the mainstage

3:30  start dress rehearsals, co-mingle for creative critical mass

(exchange of supportive comments and ideas)

6:00  open to public

9:00  finish performing, clear up the all spaces and celebrate.

If you want to get involved – - – or think you might possibly want to get involved – - – in the BCT event, contact Peter John Still.
