The BCT Experience

Boise Contemporary Theater (BCT) is a professional theater company located in Boise, Idaho. BCT is the only company in the Boise area committed to performing exclusively contemporary work. BCT’s home is in the heart of Downtown Boise in the BODO district.

Our season runs October through May and includes a four-show mainstage season as well as a spring 5X5 Reading Series which introduces five new works to our audiences. Post-show discussions, scheduled during the run of each play and during each 5X5, encourage dialogue between artists and audiences.

Mainstage productions generally have a three-week run, with 8 pm shows Wednesday through Saturday, and 2 pm Saturday matinees during the second and third weeks. Two previews are offered at a discounted rate on the Wednesday and Thursday of Opening Week.

The 5X5 Reading Series is best for ages 16 and up, and occurs on scheduled Monday evenings at 7 pm. Our Children’s Reading Series serves children 4 and up and their families, and are held at 2 pm on scheduled Sundays. All children must be accompanied by an adult; free milk and cookies are provided at each reading.

BCT hosts special events and productions from other arts organizations, including Starry Story Night (Story Story Night’s annual star-studded fundraiser), film and dance premieres, and music-related events, including the 2016 Treefort Music Fest.

The Theater

Boise Contemporary Theater’s mainstage is a black box theater. It is a highly intimate space with only 231 Seats. The seats start at number 1 on house right and run consecutively to the end of the row. There are 9 rows of seating. The seats in the theater were donated by the Egyptian Movie Theater when they went through their latest renovation. The chandeliers in the main hall as you enter the theater are on loan from the Idaho Historical Society and were once housed, at the turn of the last century, at the Pinney Theater once located on Main Street between 9th and 10th Streets.

The BCT Box Seats – generously furnished by Furniture Outfitters – offer a unique and semi-private lounge-like setting from which to experience BCT performances, readings and special events. You and your five guests are treated to comfortable, stylish seating, with two bottles of wine (your choice of red or white) and a delicious dessert platter with an array of selections provided by our partner Asiago’s.

Many of our plays include strong language and mature themes and are best suited for mature audiences (17 and older). However, some of our plays, such as A Nighttime Survival Guide, are accessible to ages 6 and up. No children under 6 are allowed at a Mainstage show. We do offer a Children’s Reading Series each season, which is best suited for children ages 6 and up; however, some of those stories are appropriate for ages 4 and up. If you have questions regarding age recommendations for specific shows, please see the page on our website for that particular show, or call the Box Office at 208 331-9224.

Do all shows have an intermission?

It depends. Usually there is one fifteen minute intermission. Longer shows may have more than one intermission, and shorter plays may not include an intermission. For information on the length of a show and the number of intermissions, please see the page on our website for that particular show, or call the Box Office at 208 331-9224.
